Collection: Baryte
Baryte (frequently spelled Barite in the US and some other places) is a dense mineral composed of barium sulfate that is white or colorless but can have other colors due to impurities. It is the primary ore of the element barium and is known for its high density, chemical inertness, and ability to block radiation.
Baryte was named in 1800 by Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten from the Greek βαρύς, heavy, due to its unusual heaviness for a non-metallic mineral.
